We’re Hiring: Community Engagement & Marketing Intern

Position Description:

HOURCAR is the Twin Cities’ and Rochester’s only nonprofit carsharing organization. 

In 2022, HOURCAR will launch Evie Community Carshare, a new all-electric one-way carsharing service with a focus on service to low-wealth communities and communities of color. Supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, this project represents the largest public/private investment in shared mobility in the United States and will be the first 100% renewable transportation system in the Western Hemisphere.  

HOURCAR seeks a Community Engagement & Marketing Intern to support HOURCAR’s Senior Planning & Community Development Manager and Product Marketing Manager for the Evie and HOURCAR services. This position will start in late Feb / early March 2022 and run through late September / early October 2022. To accommodate school schedules, the position will be part-time during the school year (8-10 hours per week) and full-time over summer. Additional hours may be granted if required by the academic program. Additional duties may be assigned as our service continues to grow and develop.

You will be involved with:

Digital & Print Marketing / Website / App

  • Support communications strategy for current HOURCAR members 
  • Assist in the marketing funnel for leads and prospective members 
  • Draft compelling content for white papers, social media, public documents
  • Support multi-media marketing campaigns via social media, direct mail, digital ads, email, print ads, and other mediums as determined.  
  • Work on and develop graphics via Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Lightroom)
  • Update EvieCarshare.com and HOURCAR.org websites as requested

Community Engagement / Events 

  • Work closely with the Senior Planning & Community Development Manager and Product Marketing Manager to develop and implement engagement campaigns with a focus on communities of color and low-wealth neighborhoods 
  • Participate in-person at community events (University of Minnesota Transportation Fair, Open Streets, etc.), support staff and/or coordinate event volunteers/ambassadors
  • Cultivate existing relationships with community partner organizations and make new connections with additional community-based organizations with similar values and interests

You have these qualifications:

  • Familiarity with multi-modal transportation, including carsharing, transit, walking and biking  
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, specifically with community members in real time (events, meetings, etc.)
  • Experience working with people of color, newcomers and English language learners, LGBTQ+, and additional under-resourced communities
  • Demonstrated ability to work with big-picture projects
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to multi-task 
  • Comfortable in a professional environment 
  • Ability to work both independently and as a part of a team 
  • Work closely with other HOURCAR staff as part of the whole team, including respecting others’ identities and using correct pronouns, and respecting everyone’s distinctive styles of learning and interacting 
  • Must have accessible transportation or the ability to use public transportation to travel to off-site meetings and events  

Bonus if you have these skills as well:

  • Experience working in small, resource-constrained organizations, startups and/or nonprofits 
  • Digital marketing platforms (ie: Google, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter) 
  • Email marketing platforms (MailChimp) 
  • Some experience with basic graphic design and web design a plus 
  • Knowledge of Twin Cities geography 


  • Able to stand for sustained periods of time in an outdoor setting (events)
  • Able to sit for sustained periods of time in an indoor setting 
  • Ability to communicate verbally 
  • Frequent use of communication devices including computer and telephone 
  • Ability to lift 35 pounds 
  • Fluent in speaking, reading, and writing English 
  • Work remotely and in-office (755 Prior Ave N, #301D, St Paul, 55104)
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and a driving record that meets HOUCAR’s membership requirements

Pay is $16/hr, part-time flexible schedule

•Transportation discounts will be provided, including carshare / transit credits.  
•Hours less than 30 per week will Earn Sick and Safe Time (ESST) benefits (not including Personal Time Off (PTO))
•Hours 30+ per week will accrue PTO
