Make a Plan for Winter

HOURCAR doesn’t hibernate. We’re here for you after the leaves fall and the scooters fly south for the winter because we know you still need to get around. We asked you how we could improve our service in the winter, and we’re so grateful for all of your insightful feedback and innovative ideas. We heard you. Here’s what we’re rolling out this winter.

We’re installing winter tires on all 2-wheel-drive vehicles. Winter tires provide better grip in cold weather and on snow and ice in all driving situations—starting, stopping, and turning. Winter tires just work.

We’re adding more vehicles with all-wheel-drive to our fleet. You’ll have the traction you need to get moving up those icy hills and through those snowy intersections.

We’re bringing regular winter hub maintenance in-house. We’ll be shoveling and salting the hubs more frequently. After it snows 3 inches or more, we’ll clear the hubs ourselves during the work day and we’ll hire a great local team to help us on the weekends and during the evening.

We’re introducing a new Winter rate plan for new members. It features the same great rates as the Voyager plan and includes four months of service from December through March and a damage fee waiver for just $100 total. Tell your friends to park their cars this winter and join HOURCAR instead. No more waking up early during snow emergencies to shovel out and move a car to the other side of the street. No more sacrificing side mirrors to the city plows. Refer a new member, and we’ll give you both $25 in driving credit.

We’re launching an all-new hub update notification service. Sign up to get updates for your favorite hub, and we’ll send you an email as soon as we clear it after a snowstorm so you can get going.

  • Let us know if you need to cancel an upcoming reservation due to inclement weather and we’ll waive any cancellation fees.
  • Let us know if you spend more than 15 minutes clearing a car and we’ll credit you for your time.
  • Let us know if an Hourcar needs a winter resupply. We stock the cars with a brush, scraper, shovel, and an extra jug winter washer fluid.

Rates & Fees

The Winter Rate Plan runs from December 1, 2019 to April 1, 2020 and can be extended through November 31, 2020 for an additional $40. All fees are nonrefundable. All charges are subject to an additional 17.075% tax in Saint Paul, 17.225% in Minneapolis, and 17.325% in Rochester, which includes city sales tax, county sales tax, state sales tax, transit improvement sales and use, and motor vehicle rental (9.2%) taxes. Driving credit cannot be used to pay state and local taxes. Qualified tax-exempt organizations should contact us to apply an exemption.

Winter Plan

  • Winter Plan costs $100 total and is available to new members only.
    • Application fee: $25
    • Membership fee: $25
    • Damage fee waiver: $50 (required).
  • Plan runs from December 1, 2019 to April 1, 2020. Can be extended through November 31, 2020 for $40.
  • Hourly rate: $8.95 per hour.
    • 100 free miles, then $0.40 per mile.
    • Midnight Hours: $5.50 per hour from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.
    • Weekday Overnight Max: Hourly rate total capped at $25 between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. Monday-Thursday.
    • Weekend Overnight Max: Hourly rate total capped at $30 between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. Friday-Sunday.
    • Increased Access Hubs: Discounted hourly rates at designated hubs.
  • Daily rate: $70 Monday-Thursday and $80 Friday-Sunday.
    • 100 free miles, then $0.40 per mile.
